National Standards for Heavy Vehicle
Weights and Dimensions:
In February 1988, the Council of Ministers of Transportation and Highway
Safety endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding designed to improve uniformity in
regulations governing the weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles
operating between provinces and territories. Since 1988, the scope and content
of the MOU has been expanded or amended on several occasions. Under the terms
of the MOU, each of the provinces and territories will permit vehicles which
comply with the appropriate weights and dimensions described in the agreement
to travel on a designated system of highways within their jurisdiction.
It should be recognized that each jurisdiction retains the authority to
allow more liberal weights and dimensions, or different types of vehicle
configurations, within their jurisdiction.
